The different aesthetic choices people make are all distinctions-that is, choices made in opposition to those made by other classes. What emerges from his analysis is that social snobbery is everywhere in the bourgeois world. Bourdieu bases his study on surveys that took into account the multitude of social factors that play a part in a Frenchperson's choice of clothing, furniture, leisure activities, dinner menus for guests, and many other matters of taste. In the course of everyday life people constantly choose between what they find aesthetically pleasing and what they consider tacky, merely trendy, or ugly. Distinction is at once a vast ethnography of contemporary France and a dissection of the bourgeois mind. France's leading sociologist focusses here on the French bourgeoisie, its tastes and preferences. Pierre Bourdieu brilliantly illuminates this situation of the middle class in the modern world. If I had one complaint, it would be the fact that these characters are 18 and 19, it makes some of the situations hard to believe and the lacking parental involvement odd. Fear You is even better!! Honestly, I’d like to be polite and say how much I respect their opinions and sympathize with their perspectives … but I don’t. I think many of the latter comments came from people who didn’t read past the word “Tarot.” Others were of the “Tarot cards are playthings of the devil and no good can come of them, and don’t bother me with the facts” variety. Some of these were made early in the series and were reasonable expressions of concern that the link to the occult was too strong to overcome. When I first published a version of this series on Patheos five years ago, there were many objections to my even writing about tarot. What it reveals is a people who let faith and wonder imbue even humble pieces of paper used to play games. When you know how people dressed, sang, danced, and, yes, played, you know that people a little bit better. I feel the pulse of medieval Catholics and their uniquely beautiful and challenging world in the cards. By looking at a small or seemingly insignificant subject in detail, it brings people back to life. This was a tiny sliver of European Catholic cultural history, and by reclaiming it we begin to feel some of the life of our ancestors in the faith. That’s been the point of this series, and I hope by now you’ve been amply convinced. Tarot cards were not created as tools of divination. The following is only a list of books in my library on the Wenzi and Liezi. There is definitely a connection between these texts, as the ideas of Laozi flow through both the Wenzi and the Liezi. It has been suggested that Wenzi studied directly under Laozi, and that Liezi was a student of Wenzi. The Wenzi (Wen Tzu) and The Liezi (Lieh Tzu) are considered to be important Daoist texts, and some put them on a par with Laozi and Zhuangzi. I remember reading this book soon after it first came out, in 2014 or 2015, and one of the most memorable scenes – so memorable it stuck with me for eight years – was a line about the hero, Carmine, giving a girl an ‘angry dragon’. I have to say, I HATE it when authors go back and rewrite their old books just to make them more ‘acceptable’ or PC or whatever. But how much will they have to sacrifice? Can they escape their pasts? And, most of all, what does it mean to be free? Murder and betrayal are a way of life, and nothing comes without a price-especially not freedom. In a world full of chaos, where money and power rule, Haven and Carmine yearn to break free, but a string of events that began before either of them were born threatens to destroy them instead. Entangled in a web of secrets and lies, they learn that while different on the surface, they have more in common than anyone would think. Now, a twist of fate causes their worlds to collide. Carmine, born into a wealthy Mafia family, lived a life of privilege and excess. Haven Antonelli and Carmine DeMarco grew up under vastly different circumstances. Haven, a second-generation slave, was isolated in the middle of the desert, her days full of hard work and terrifying abuse. I leave it to the discerning reader to untangle the contrary strands of history.Oh. The tales contained in this volume are all true, and every one is false.
